Mr. Wilberforce on The Abolition of the Slave Trade
Purpose of the Document:
William Wilberforce wrote A Letter on the Abolition of the Slave Trade to explain and defend the case for ending British participation in the transatlantic slave trade. Addressed to his constituents, the document was intended to present the evidence and reasoning that had convinced him that the trade was morally indefensible. Wilberforce sought to demonstrate that the slave trade caused suffering at every stage, from the capture and enslavement of Africans, through the Middle Passage, to forced labor in the West Indies. He also challenged arguments that the trade was economically necessary or could simply be improved through regulation. Ultimately, the document was written to persuade readers that abolition was not merely a political or economic question, but a matter of justice, Christian morality, national responsibility, and human dignity.
